Are we sure that a true leader should never show himself vulnerable?

Imagine this scene: an important meeting, tension in the air, the boss takes the floor. Everyone expects him to have the perfect answer. And instead, with complete ease, he says: “I have no idea. I don't know. Did any of you figure it out? We need to figure this out together!”

Surprise, dismay... and then? Confidence. Because finally that leader. it doesn't look like a perfect robot, but a real person. And that's exactly what makes the difference.

Why is feigning confidence the fastest way to lose credibility?

For years we have been taught that leadership is synonymous with control, absolute security and infallible decisionsNo one likes an uncertain boss, right? But there's a problem: no one is truly infallible.

The result? Leaders desperately cling to an image of perfection and teams feeling compelled to do the same. And what happens when everyone pretends to know it all? Zero innovation, zero growth, zero honesty.

The truth is that people don't look for perfect leaders, they look for leaders humansPeople who can admit a mistake without hiding behind excuses. People who can ask for help without seeing it as a sign of weakness.

Vulnerability is not a limitation, it is the secret of true strength.

Think about it: who has truly inspired you in life? Someone who seemed invincible or someone who, despite difficulties, showed the courage to be yourself?

Showing vulnerability doesn't mean feeling sorry for yourself or being fragile. It means:

  • Be honestIf you don't know something, admitting it makes you more credible.
  • Involving the teamPeople perform best when they feel like they are actively involved in the process, not just executors.
  • Building trustIf the leader is honest, the team will be honest too. And that makes all the difference.

A leader who admits a mistake doesn't lose authority, he strengthens it. Why? Because it shows he's not afraid to take risks.

So why are so many leaders still afraid of showing themselves vulnerable?

The answer is simple: the fear of judgmentIt's thought that showing uncertainty means losing the team's respect. But the reality is exactly the opposite.

If a leader makes a mistake and pretends nothing happened, everyone sees it. If, however, he says: “Okay, I was wrong. What can we learn from this?”, then it becomes a point of reference.

So, better to be a marble statue or someone people can relate to really connect?

The secret to strong leadership? Being real.

We spent years believing that leadership was a matter of imageBut successful companies aren't run by perfect people, they're run by people authentic.

A work environment where no one is afraid of making mistakes is an environment that generates creativity, innovation and concrete resultsBecause the best ideas aren't born from the fear of failure, but from the freedom to try.

Final question: is it better to be perfect or credible?

So here we are at the point: What makes a truly strong leader? The fact of never making mistakes (spoiler: impossible) or the courage to say “I don’t know” and find an answer together with the team?

Perhaps the time has come to abandon the old idea of leadership and build a new one, based on trust, authenticity and vulnerabilityBecause the true power of a leader lies not in hiding one's weaknesses, but in knowing how to transform them into strengths.

What do you think of this idea?

What was the last mistake you admitted to your team? How did they react? Let's talk about it in the comments! 💬
