Can we really “learn” to be authentic?

In recent years, authenticity has become the magic word In the management world, everyone talks about authentic, transparent, and empathetic leaders. But there's a small problem: when authenticity becomes a technique to be learned, it is no longer authentic.

Let's think about it for a moment: can there be a method to be spontaneous? A model for being natural? Doesn't that sound a bit like a contradiction?

If we have to study strategies to appear authentic, then perhaps we aren't really. And if we start treating authenticity as a skill to be honed, we risk reducing it to a exercise in style, something that is recited rather than embodied.

The problem of pre-packaged techniques

Today we are witnessing a curious phenomenon: leaders who try to “seem authentic” studying body language, tone of voice, strategic pauses in speeches. It's as if leadership has become a theatrical performance, in which every expression is designed to seem spontaneous.

But here's the thing: the constructed authenticity is visibleAnd when people perceive that an attitude is forced, everything loses value.

Who inspires more? The manager who has read all the leadership manuals and knows exactly when to tilt his head to appear empathetic? Or the one who really listens to you, without worrying about "seem" a good listener?

Maybe it's time to stop complicating things. Authenticity is not a way of communicating, is a way of beingIt's the courage to show yourself as you are, without filters and without fear of not pleasing everyone.

How do you really practice authenticity?

The hard part? There is no manual to be authentic. None checklistThere's no magic formula. However, there are some signs that help us understand if we're going in the right direction:

  • Consistency between words and actions. Do you say one thing and do another? Bad. You say something and actually do it? Well. It's simple.
  • Recognize your limits. If you don't know something, why pretend you do? If you need help, why not ask for it? There's nothing more credible than a leader who says: “I don't know, but we'll find out together.”.
  • Show emotions without fear. If you're excited, show it. If something worries you, don't hide it behind a frown. false securityEmpathy comes from truth, not from forced control of emotions.
  • Accepting confrontation without always having to have the last word. An authentic leader really listen, he doesn't just wait for the right moment to reiterate his opinion.

Being authentic doesn't mean being perfect

In the end, being authentic doesn't mean have all the answers, but be willing to ask questions. It doesn't mean never make a mistake, but don't be afraid to admit it when it happens.

It means free yourself from pressure of having to fit a model and allow oneself to be a natural leader, without artifice.

Why does all this matter? Because people don't work better when the leader seems infallibleThey work better when they trust him. And trust doesn't come from perfection, but from consistency.

Authentic Leadership: Technique or Connection?

If we think about it, the companies that achieve the best results are not those where the leader try to impress, but those where the leader focuses on create real connections.

Maybe it's time to rethink the concept of leadership. You don't need sophisticated techniques, you just need the courage to be yourself.

What do you think?
